🐾 The Itchy Season Is Here: Why Your Pup Might Be Scratching More (and How to Help!)

If your dog has been scratching, nibbling, or doing that adorable-yet-slightly-concerning butt scoot lately… you’re not alone. Fall is officially itchy season — and our pups are feeling it. Between lingering summer allergens, dry air, and fall fleas (yep, they’re still around!), this time of year can make even the happiest tails wag a little less.

But don’t worry — Lucy & Co. has your back (and your dog’s!). Here’s what’s behind all that itchiness and how you can help your pup feel comfortable again. 🐶💛

🌼 1. Allergies Aren’t Just a Human Thing

Just like us, dogs can get seasonal allergies. Fall pollen, ragweed, and mold spores can trigger itchy skin, watery eyes, or that constant scratching you’ve noticed. If your pup’s been licking their paws a lot, that’s often a sign of seasonal allergies at work.

How to help:

  • Wipe down after walks: Use a damp cloth or gentle pet wipe to remove pollen from your dog’s fur and paws.

  • Bathe regularly: A soothing oatmeal or aloe-based shampoo can calm irritated skin and wash away allergens.

  • Ask your vet: They might recommend a dog-safe antihistamine or allergy supplement if it’s persistent.

🦟 2. Fleas & Friends Haven’t Gone on Vacation Yet

Many people assume fleas disappear when summer ends — but surprise! They love warm homes and cozy fall weather. A single flea bite can make your dog super itchy, and sensitive pups can have allergic reactions to just one bite.

How to help:

  • Stay on prevention: Keep your pup’s flea and tick routine going year-round.

  • Check their favorite spots: Look behind ears, around the neck, and near the tail for flea dirt (tiny black specks).

  • Vacuum often: Fleas and eggs can hide in carpets, rugs, and bedding.

🍂 3. Dry Air = Dry, Itchy Skin

As the temps drop and the heat kicks on, the air inside gets drier — and your dog’s skin might feel it. If you’ve noticed dandruff or flaky spots, it could just be seasonal dryness.

How to help:

  • Add moisture: A humidifier can do wonders for both you and your dog’s skin.

  • Feed healthy fats: Omega-3 supplements or foods like salmon oil can help nourish the skin from the inside out.

  • Use gentle grooming products: Avoid over-bathing, and always go for hydrating, pH-balanced dog shampoos.

🐕 4. Keep Their Coat Clean & Comfy

Regular brushing helps spread natural oils, remove debris, and catch any hitchhiking bugs before they become a problem. Plus, it’s a great bonding moment (and let’s be honest — your pup loves the extra attention).

Try this:
After brushing, slip them into one of our Lucy & Co. raincoats or vests to keep allergens and dirt off their coat during outdoor adventures. Cute and functional? That’s the vibe. 😉

💛 A Happy Pup = Less Itch

The itchy season might be unavoidable, but with a little care and consistency, your dog can stay comfy, clean, and ready for all the fall fun — from leaf piles to pumpkin patch photo ops.
