Leave It Better: Supporting the Boundary Waters Wilderness

At Lucy & Co., we believe every adventure—whether it’s a quick walk around the block or a weekend exploring the great outdoors with your pup—comes with a responsibility: leave it better than you found it. 🌲🐾

That’s why we’re proud to support the incredible work of Friends of the Boundary Waters Wilderness. With every purchase of our Leave It Better and Adventure Responsibly Poop Clips, 10% of proceeds are donated to help protect one of the most breathtaking wilderness areas in North America.

Because protecting wild places matters—for us, for our pups, and for the generations of adventurers still to come.

A Wilderness Like No Other

The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is truly one of America’s most special outdoor spaces. Spanning over 1.1 million acres of lakes, streams, and forest in northern Minnesota, it’s the most visited wilderness area in the United States.

This incredible landscape is a maze of more than 1,100 pristine lakes, hundreds of miles of waterways, and untouched boreal forest where wildlife like moose, wolves, and bald eagles roam freely.

For paddlers, hikers, campers—and yes, adventure-loving dogs—it’s a place where you can truly disconnect and experience the wild the way it’s meant to be.

But places this special don’t stay protected by accident.

50 Years of Protecting the Boundary Waters

For nearly five decades, Friends of the Boundary Waters Wilderness has brought together people who love this landscape and want to ensure it remains wild forever.

Founded in the 1970s, the organization played a major role in passing the 1978 Boundary Waters Protection Act, a landmark law that safeguarded the wilderness and helped shape the protected area we know today.

Today, the Friends continue to defend the Boundary Waters in courtrooms, legislatures, and communities across the country. Their mission is simple but powerful:

Protect the wilderness and connect people from all backgrounds to the magic of experiencing it.

Why Protection Still Matters

Despite decades of conservation success, the Boundary Waters still faces major threats.

Foreign mining companies have proposed copper-sulfide mines near the wilderness, a type of mining known for producing acid drainage that can release toxic metals like mercury, arsenic, and lead into surrounding waterways.

In a place defined by interconnected lakes and rivers, even small amounts of pollution could spread quickly and permanently damage the ecosystem.

Simply put: once the water is polluted, it can’t be restored to what it was before.

That’s why advocacy and awareness are so important—and why organizations like Friends of the Boundary Waters continue to fight for lasting protection.

Inspiring the Next Generation of Wilderness Lovers

Protection isn’t just about policy—it’s about people.

Through their No Boundaries to the Boundary Waters program, Friends of the Boundary Waters introduces students from diverse and underserved communities to the wilderness through classroom visits and week-long canoe trips.

For many students, it’s their first time experiencing a place completely untouched by roads, screens, or city noise.

And those experiences matter.

Because the more people who connect with nature, the more people will fight to protect it.

How Your Pup Can Help

This is where our community comes in.

Our Leave It Better and Adventure Responsibly Poop Clips were created to make it easy to carry used waste bags hands-free on walks and adventures.

They’re a small but meaningful reminder of the same philosophy that guides wilderness protection:

Respect the places you explore.

And when you purchase one, 10% of proceeds go directly toward protecting the Boundary Waters.
