Backyard BBQs & Pup Etiquette: How to Include Your Dog in the Holiday Fun 🇺🇸🌭🐾

There’s nothing more American than a backyard BBQ, and let’s be real—everything’s better with your dog by your side. As you fire up the grill and cue the playlist this 4th of July weekend, don’t forget your four-legged friend wants in on the fun, too!

Whether you’re hosting the paw-ty or tagging along to a friend’s cookout, here’s how to keep your pup safe, happy, and totally part of the celebration.

1. Bring the Party Pup-plies 🧺

Start strong with the must-haves:

  • A comfy blanket or dog bed so your pup has a chill spot.

  • Collapsible water bowl + fresh water (hydration = key).

  • Some Lucy & Co. flair: a festive bandana, lightweight harness, or leash that screams BBQ but make it fashion.

Bonus points if you match your dog. Just sayin'.

2. Skip the Table Scraps, Serve Up Dog-Safe Snacks 🍔🐾

We know it’s tempting, but a BBQ isn’t a buffet for your pup. Avoid sharing things like:

  • Bones (they can splinter!)

  • Onions, garlic, or anything seasoned

  • Grapes or desserts with xylitol

Instead, bring your own treats! Frozen watermelon cubes, carrot sticks, or your dog’s fave biscuits will do the trick—and keep those puppy eyes satisfied.

3. Mind the Grill Thrill 🔥

Hot grills, dropped skewers, and excited tails don’t mix well. Make sure your dog’s hangout zone is far from the cooking area. Trust us, you don’t want a singed snoot or a stolen burger.

4. Greet the Guests Like a Pro 🎉

BBQs = lots of people, smells, and distractions. A few quick reminders:

  • If your pup is a social butterfly, great! Just keep them leashed at first for polite intros.

  • Not everyone loves dog kisses mid-hotdog, so respect boundaries.

  • For shy dogs, create a quiet corner with some toys or chews where they can decompress.

5. Cool Down in Style 💦

Summer weekends are hot. Set up a shady spot or even a baby pool so your pup can splash and chill. Our bandanas are also a great way to keep things breezy (and adorable), soak them in icy water for a quick cool down for your pup!

6. Stick Around for the Fireworks? Maybe Not... 🎆

As festive as fireworks are for us, they can be scary for dogs. If things are getting loud, it’s better to bring your pup inside to a cozy, quiet spot with white noise or calming music.

Ready to Paw-ty? 🐶✨

With a little prep and some pup-friendly planning, your dog can totally enjoy the 4th of July BBQ vibes right along with you. Stay safe, stay cool, and give your pup a hotdog-shaped plush toy instead of the real thing. ❤️🤍💙
